National Geographic Special Collections: Home

About Special Collections

The Special Collections staff preserve, make available, and celebrate the history, heritage, and accomplishments of the National Geographic Society. We provide research tools and resources for use across National Geographic. In addition to serving the needs of staff and grantees, we encourage a vibrant, digital, global, research culture in areas of particular interest to National Geographic.

Collections

Our collections include:

  • National Geographic publications, maps, and more;
  • photographs, artwork, and illustrations;
  • personal papers and manuscripts; and
  • film and media.

Special Collections also manages media assets curated from our latest Explorer-led science, storytelling, and education programs.  You can learn more about our Digital Preservation Initiative and follow our archival explorations in our Archives & Film Preservation Blog.

Access

At National Geographic we are transforming our public space into a reimagined Base Camp. We are unable to accommodate external requests or onsite research to Special Collections during this period of construction. We look forward to sharing plans for a new research facility in the coming months.

In the meantime, you can learn more about National Geographic history by exploring our online collections and other resources available throughout this website.
