Digital Preservation Initiative

The National Geographic Society Digital Preservation Initiative began in 2018 with the mission to preserve and digitize 130+ years of the Society's unique work and contributions to science and exploration.

This digital platform will encompass all of the Society's heritage collections: audio, film, photos, documents, artifacts, rare books, and maps. The platform allows users to discover this rich repository of scientific, cultural, and environmental primary source materials.

About the Digital Preservation Initiative

The National Geographic Society Digital Preservation Initiative began in 2016 with the mission to preserve and digitize 130+ years of the Society's unique work and contributions to science and exploration. The DPI seeks to digitally preserve and provide access to much of the archive, and to join media, photo and art, document collections, and more into a centralized repository. This allows unprecedented access to and understanding of the Society's incredible heritage materials. Since the initiative's inception, we have digitized tens of thousands of archival objects, including audio, film, photos, documents, and artifacts. As we plan for the project's future, we hope to include artifacts, rare books, and maps that also reside in the Society's heritage collections.

Below, you can find more about the DPI, our accomplishments thus far, and plans for future projects. You can also find much of our digitization work as part of the Archives' Curated Collections page, coming soon.
